Goa Guide Book
Goa originally formed part of the Mauryan Empire around 300BC after which it came under the rule of varies tribes of India and the Vijayanar Empire. It was an important harbour for the transport of Arabian horses into India in the 14th century.

The Portuguese arrived in a big way back in 1510, with the intent of establishing a spice route and Christianity, the main missionary being St Francis Xavier who arrived in 1542. The spice trade ushered in a golden age for the area and beautiful Renaissance architecture sprung up. There were however bleak periods, especially during the Inquisition which started in 1567 during which thousands were killed.

The Portuguese left the country in 1961 but left behind a rich mixed heritage of Portuguese and Indian cultures in this area which resulted in distinctly different cuisine, music, dress and beliefs in this area compared to the rest of India.
